Almost four years ago the Nurse Advisory Council of the NCCHC, of which I am Co-Chair, presented a four part webinar series entitled Achieving Success as a Correctional Nurse Manager. It was very well-attended and received, and we have been asked to present it again in early 2025. In doing research to update the presentation, I decided to share some information with you, our blog readers, because I think it is important and applicable not only to nurse managers, but all correctional nurses.
Achieving success as a correctional nurse manager requires a unique blend of clinical expertise, leadership skills, and an understanding of the correctional environment. This role is both challenging and rewarding, demanding a high level of professionalism and dedication. Here are some key strategies to help you excel in this position:
Develop Strong Clinical Skills
As a correctional nurse manager, you must possess a solid foundation in nursing practice. This includes staying current with medical and nursing knowledge, understanding the specific health needs of the incarcerated population, and being proficient in emergency care. It is also important to conduct a self-assessment so that you can focus on areas where your knowledge base presents opportunities for growth. Regularly attending continuing education courses and obtaining certifications relevant to correctional nursing and healthcare can enhance your clinical skills and ensure you provide the best care possible.
Cultivate Leadership Abilities
Effective leadership is crucial in managing a team of nurses within a correctional facility. This involves setting clear expectations, providing constructive feedback, and fostering a supportive work environment. Strong leaders are also proficient at conflict resolution and can navigate the complexities of working within a correctional setting. Developing your leadership skills through formal training programs or mentorship can significantly impact your success.
Understand the Correctional Environment
Working in a correctional facility presents unique challenges that differ from traditional healthcare settings, including the understanding that we are practicing in facilities where healthcare is not the primary mission. It is essential to understand the security protocols, the legal and ethical considerations, and the specific health issues prevalent among the incarcerated population. Building a good working relationship with correctional officers and other staff members can help create a more efficient and safer environment for all.
Prioritize Communication
Clear and effective communication is vital in a correctional setting. This includes not only communicating with your nursing staff but also with incarcerated persons, correctional officers, and other healthcare providers. Good communication helps in managing patient care, ensuring compliance with protocols, and promptly addressing any issues that arise. Regular team meetings and open lines of communication promote a collaborative atmosphere.
Focus on Staff Development
Investing in the professional growth of your nursing team is essential for maintaining quality standards of care. This can be achieved through regular training sessions, encouraging continuing education, and providing opportunities for career advancement. A well-trained and motivated team is more likely to perform effectively and provide quality care to their correctional patients.
Implement Evidence-Based Practices
Utilizing evidence-based practices ensures that the care provided is based on the best available research and clinical expertise. This can improve patient outcomes and enhance the overall quality of care within the correctional facility. Regularly staying updated with the latest research and guidelines in healthcare is crucial for the continued provision of effective and quality care to our patients.
Emphasize Ethical and Legal Standards
Correctional nurse managers must adhere to strict ethical and legal standards. This includes respecting patient confidentiality, obtaining informed consent and refusals, and providing care without discrimination. Understanding the legal rights of incarcerated persons and the regulations governing correctional healthcare is essential for maintaining professional integrity and avoiding legal issues.
Foster a Culture of Safety
Creating a safe environment for both staff and incarcerated persons is a top priority. This involves implementing safety protocols, conducting regular risk assessments, and ensuring that all staff members are trained in emergency procedures. A culture of safety not only protects individuals but also promotes a more stable and productive work environment.
Manage Resources Efficiently
Resource management is a critical aspect of the nurse manager role. This includes staffing, budgeting, and ensuring that staff have the medical supplies and resources needed to do their job. Efficient resource management helps in providing consistent and quality care while also maintaining the financial health of the facility/program.
Advocate for Correctional Health
Advocating for the health needs of incarcerated persons is an important responsibility. This can involve working to improve healthcare policies within the facility, ensuring that incarcerated persons have access to necessary medical and mental health services, and identifying and addressing any barriers to care. Advocacy efforts can lead to better health outcomes.
Conclusion
Success as a correctional nurse manager requires a multifaceted approach that combines clinical expertise, strong leadership, and a thorough understanding of the correctional environment. By focusing on continuous improvement, effective communication, and ethical practice, you can make a significant impact on the health and well-being of the incarcerated population. Developing your clinical and leadership skills will provide a solid foundation for your correctional nurse manager role. Supporting the professional development of your healthcare team will enhance their skills and confidence, which will lead to the provision of effective and quality patient care.
